Rick Ross + Symphony of Sound

The Master Class: Written + Photographed by Marika N. Johnson

The city was most def out in full force!! Some, in formal attire, some, in street inspired wear to see a fusion of hip-hop and Rick Ross backed by an orchestra. As he graced the stage of the Boutwell Auditorium in Birmingham, AL he was accompanied by a full symphony of musicians, delivering a performance that was nothing short of FYE (insert flames). The evening promised an innovative twist on Ross’s iconic catalog, and it delivered that and much more, leaving the audience in a tizzy and cheering on their feet.

.In a moment of grandeur, Ricky Rose’ took center stage, exuding his trademark aura of confidence and swagger. With the orchestra, directed and scored by David Crenshaw behind him, Ross wasted no time diving into his list of hits, kicking off the night with winners like “Hustlin'” and “The Devil Is a Lie.”

Ross’s commanding flow intertwined seamlessly with the rich, orchestral arrangements. With each verse, Ross easily rode the waves of sound, his lyrics taking on new life against the backdrop of the orchestra’s violins. Tracks like “Aston Martin Music” and “B.M.F. (Blowin’ Money Fast)” resonated with newfound depth and grandeur, while slower ballads like “Maybach Music III” showcased Ross’s lyrical prowess against a backdrop of lush strings and haunting harmonies.

Perhaps the most remarkable aspect of the evening was the way in which it transcended genre boundaries. I am absolutely loving the way hip hop adds an additional layer of musicality, making the live shows that much LIVE-er (It IS a word, don’t tell me differently). This was definitely a night forever etched in the annuals of music history of Bham.
